The SHANGHAI QUARTET received an outstanding review for its performance at the
Mt. Desert Festival of Chamber Music:
Headline: "Elegant opener for Chamber Fest"
"The Festival opened Tuesday with the spectacular Shanghai Quartet. The elegant
and virtuosic Quartet has not been heard at the Festival for several years, and
their welcome return exceeded all expectations. The Shanghai Quartet maintains a
detachment from the Mozart which was refreshing and illuminating. Penderecki
'Leaves From an Unwritten Diary' was given its world premiere by the Shanghai
Quartet. The piece is so intense it leaves one gasping. Violins wail and weep,
the cello pounds and soothes, the viola has a stunning passage which suspends
all emotion, before dropping everything back into the swirl. As the end nears, a
quiet lyricism surrounds and contains the torrent, but it continues to echo even
as it fades." Bar Harbor Times - July 28
The Shanghai Quartet's busy summer continues with 8 concerts at the Casals
Festival in Prades, France.
- MARTIN HASELBOECK's collaboration with John Malkovich, "The Infernal Comedy"
was a major success in Vienna with 5 sold-out performances followed by a
performance at the Peralada Festival in Spain. It drew major international press
coverage including a CNN feature and wonderful reviews from all over the world:
"In a word, the entire thing reveals itself in this production as an original,
successful whole. The combination might seem wild. But it actually is wonderful
and works." Frankfurter Rundshau - July 3
"Hollywood star John Malkovich is brilliant as a serial killer, Jack Unterweger.
A musical hell with wit and irony. A great solo piece from a superstar." Die
Presse - July 2
"Michael Sturminger's devastatingly absurd and unnerving "The Infernal Comedy:
Confessions of a Serial Killer" consists of eight monologues separated by
virtuoso performances by two sopranos of arias by classical composers, backed by
the magnificent period instrument orchestra Wiener Akademie. It's a bizarre
concept, but no less bizarre than Unterweger's story." Variety - July 2
"Malkovitch, supported by musical director Martin Haselbock, put on an intimate
performance with the large Baroque orchestra, the Wiener Akademie, in the center
of the stage." ABC.es July 20
"The Infernal Comedy" will continue touring the world with performances slated
at the Barbican Centre in London, the Holland Festival, at Paris Opera and in
Hamburg, Luxmbourg, Malaga, Bilbao and Toronto. And another collaboration in the
works between Haselböck, Malkovich and Sturminger: Mozart's "Abduction from the
Seraglio" which will premiere in Jul 2010.
- Baritone JAMES MADDALENA sang the premiere of Paul Moravec's first opera, "The
Letter" at Santa Fe Opera to much acclaim. Based on W. Somerset Maugham's play,
the story is perhaps best known in its 1940 film adaptation:
"James Maddalena, another first-rate singer and actor, brings nuanced complexity
to the role of Howard Joyce, the lawyer who loyally defends her but finds
himself repulsed by the murder and disgusted with himself for helping get her
freed." Denver Post - July 30
"Baritone James Maddalena's Howard Joyce, the family lawyer, was honest, capable
and yet willing to lie to save Robert's heart; he sang with a thoroughly
professional mix of concentration and introspection." Santa Fe New Mexican -
July 27
"James Maddalena sings powerfully and acts with nuanced precision." Santa Fe
Reporter - July 29
- Baritone SANFORD SYLVAN's annual appearances at the Carmel Bach Festival
continue to bring exceptional reviews:
"Sylvan’s range of vocal colors and personal expressiveness put him in a class
of his own." SFCV.org - July 17
"Bravura passages had the vocal character of rich, burnished wood; tender
sections were smooth and sweet, his voice conveying dark hopelessness." SFCV.org
- July 27
Sanford Sylvan's performances of John Adams' "A Flowering Tree" received a
Helpmann Award on July 27th from Live Performance Australia as "Best Symphony
Orchestra Concert." Sylvan repeats this role next week in the Peter Sellars
production at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival.
The following reviews will be posted to our homepage:
- Pianist BRUNO CANINO, mentioned in a review of James Ehnes from the Toronto
Summer Music Festival: "I would like to hear him teamed with one of the great
collaborative geniuses such as legendary Italian Bruno Canino. Such a team could
make history." The Globe and Mail - July 23
- Violinist CHLOE HANSLIP playing Prokofiev 2 with the City of Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra Youth Orchestra: "Diminutive in size but large in the warmth
of tone projected, she commanded attention from the work’s quiet mournful
opening for solo violin to its extrovert folk-dance finale." Birmingham Post -
July 28
- Soprano KIRSTEN BLAISE in Handel's "La Resurrezione," Ludwigsburger Schloss
Festival; "The soprano fulfills all requirements that a Handel interpreter
needs: rich, even timbre, clear intonation and enunciation of text, high precise
coloratura ability and a wonderful sweet piano." Stuttgarter Zeitung July 21
- Tenor STEVEN DAVISLIM, Schubert "Winterreise" on Melba Records: "The
Australian tenor brings his shining, warm tone to an interpretation where
theatricality is pointed judiciously with the requisite finesse." OPUS HD
(France) - July 3
