As
booking for the 2010-11 season kicks into gear, we are very pleased to announce
two additions to our roster: pianist CHRISTOPHER O'RILEY and METALES M5 MEXICAN
BRASS:
- Pianist CHRISTOPHER O'RILEY, the renowned multifaceted musician, has played in
most of the major concert halls of the world. California Artists will represent
the classical part of his career: recitals, chamber music concerts and orchestra
appearances. His recent recitals with cellist Carter Brey earned outstanding
acclaim:
"Brey and O’Riley are longtime collaborators, as was evident from their finely
nuanced, impeccable partnership. Their rigorous approach and sensitive
music-making illuminated the subtleties of infrequently performed works. O’Riley
and Brey offered a richly colored interpretation, before ending the concert with
a sizzling performance of Piazolla's 'Grand Tango'." New York Times
May 25
"Just two musicians filled Grand Rapids' own cathedral of sound with an
expansive sonic experience of operatic and symphonic proportions. O'Riley
tackled the Chopin sonata with power and passion. All of the above would have
been plenty, but the evening blossomed further with an encore of Piazzolla's 'Le
Grand Tango,' as full of heat as it was of fire." Grand Rapids Free Press - May
15
- METALES M5 Mexican Brass is a lot of brass, a lot of music, and a lot of fun
in programs of classical and world music, contemporary music and pops. Five
young musicians break the barriers of musical genres as they take the Blues to
the Opera and Bach to the roads of the Michoacan - fresh, fun, extraordinary!
"METALES M5 presented a concert of highly unusual music. All of the works were
originally composed for brass quintet; some especially for M5. Punctual and
spectacular Freund, Miranda, Miguel, Meléndez and Suárez, opened the
extraordinary concert, standing without music stands, with 'Escape' by Kevin
McKee. As usual they began drawing applause worthy of the end of a concert. The
program continued in the spirit of M5´s typical interaction with the audience.
They always have fun playing good music; charming, sparkling and educational.
Brilliant, energetic and played with top quality; a very satisfying concert full
of dignity." Cambio de Michoacan - May 19
METALES M5 has concerts in Morelia, MX on June 22 and July 2 (Brassfest).
- The PHILHARMONIA BAROQUE ORCHESTRA received an outstanding review for its
concert at Zankel Hall:
"Pergolesi, the great hope of Italian music early in the 18th century, died at
26. Hear an inspired account of his Stabat Mater and you understand the enormity
of the loss. Using only two singers, strings and organ, Pergolesi touched on the
ineffable. That kind of performance ended a concert by Nicholas McGegan and his
outstanding San Francisco period-instrument ensemble, the Philharmonia Baroque
Orchestra, at Zankel Hall. McGegan drew exemplary support from his fine players.
The instrumentalists, too, took a spin in the spotlight in a robust account of
Corelli’s Concerto Grosso in D. And Elizabeth Blumenstock, the ensemble’s
leader, was a poised, lively soloist in Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in B flat."
New York Times - May 1
Philharmonia is very pleased to announce Peter Pastreich as its new Executive
Director. Longtime President of the San Francisco Symphony, Pastreich is one the
major figures in the orchestra world.
- MARTIN HASELBOECK paid a fitting tribute to the 200th Anniversary of Haydn's
death, conducting the Wiener Akademie in the composer's "Creation" for 3
sold-out performances in the marble Festsaal of the Old University where Haydn
himself gave hs last public appearance:
"The Creation was on the program in an impulsive, uplifting interpretation.
Haselböck led his period instrument forces in this beautiful sound painting
before him, while showing no mercy as the continuo player. The men and women of
the Vienna Singverein also had their joy in celebrating the event; they
contributed their share to the success of the evening in best form."
Wiener Zeitung - June 2
Martin Haselböck conducts Handel's "Belshazzar" this month at the Handel
Festival in Halle and the Europäische Wochen in Passau, and programs of Liszt
and Bach at the Festival Raiding.
- Mark Izu, BRENDA WONG AOKI's husband and longtime artistic collaborator,
received a Northern California Regional Emmy Award on May 17 from The National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for outstanding Musical
Composition/Arrangement for his score for "Bolinao 52," a film about the
Vietnamese Boat People which received an Emmy Award for Outstanding
Documentary. Izu has composed scores for film, live concerts and theater,
including a new score for the DVD release of Hayakawa’s 1919 masterpiece, "The
Dragon Painter."
The following reviews will be posted to our homepage:
- MICHAEL GUETTLER conducting "Siegfried," Washington National Opera: "Michael
Guettler drew fine playing from the orchestra." MusicalAmerica.com - May 5
- Soprano KIRSTEN BLAISE as Antigona in Handel's "Admeto" Göttingen Handel
Festival under Nicholas McGegan: "The fine, sparkling soprano Kirsten
Blaise as Antigona." DEUTSCHLANDFUNK - May 27
- Soprano ELLEN HARGIS performing with Piffaro in Philadelphia: "Most welcome
was soprano Ellen Hargis, whose feeling for the music is all the more palpable."
Philadelphia Inquirer - May 12
- Tenor JOHN ALER's 30th season at the Cincinnati May Festival in Mozart's
"Requiem:" "John Aler, McNeese and Sigmundsson were all satisfying."
Courier-Journal - May 27
- Tenor STEVE DAVISLIM as Max in "Der Freischutz" (Robert Wilson production) in
Baden-Baden under Thomas Hengelbrock: "Steve Davislim was a lyrical,
strong Max." Ruhr Nachrichten - May 18
- Baritone JAMES MADDALENA in Opera Boston's production of Smetana's Bartered
Bride:
"Maddalena
is also a superbly understated comedian, with some astonishing low notes."
Boston Phoenix - May 5
- Baritone SANFORD SYLVAN's recording of Fussell's "Wilde," with Gil Rose,
Boston Modern Orchestra: "Sanford Sylvan sings with warmth and conviction."
Fanfare - March/April
